After their involvement in the Battle of Festubert on 15th May, 1915, the 2nd Leicestershire battalion of the Garhwal Brigade, Meerut Division of the Indian Corps moved back to Croix Barbée to rest and reorganise. But they were soon back in the fray when on 19th May they moved back to the front line where they remained until relieved on 25th May. One of their casualties during this time spent in the trenches was Alfred Royle. According to the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission he was killed on 24th May but the Graves Registration Report Form recorded the date of his death as 21st May. The battalion diary makes no mention of his death but does record that there was still plenty of activity in the form of shelling, sniper fire and patrolling taking place.
